AccurioPro VDP Errors and Other Issues on Recently Updated Windows Systems

This article provides details about various error conditions that have been reported by a number of AccurioPro VDP customers on the Windows operating system.  Note that these errors are caused by issues within the Adobe InDesign application that coincide with a Microsoft Windows update. Adobe is actively investigating these issues. In the meantime, we have provided below all of the details that we have at the moment, as well as fixes and workarounds for the issues.

IMPORTANT NOTICE
A NEW ADOBE INDESIGN VERSION
IS NOW AVAILABLE!

On January 23, 2026, Adobe announced the availability of Adobe InDesign 2026 v21.2. This new version fixes ALL of the issues outlined in this article. This update is being rolled out in a phased manner, so it may take a day or so before it becomes available in your area. Adobe has also announced that a new version will be available for InDesign 2025 users as well, but we do not yet have an official release date for that version.
We strongly advise that you take this opportunity to update all of your systems to the 2026 version of Adobe InDesign as soon as the 21.2 update is available.

Thank you for your patience, and for your continued support of AccurioPro VDP software!

SUMMARY OF ISSUES

ISSUE #1) PDF "SERIOUS ERROR" MESSAGE

The first and most common symptom of this issue is the following error message, which may appear during a PDF merge session:

ISSUE #2) BAD TAG, MISSING LINK, OR RULE WARNINGS, ETC.

The second symptom reported by our users are various error or warning messages such as Bad Tags, or warnings about a document that is missing Variable Link or Rule definitions.

ISSUE #3) CRASHING ON SOME PPML JOBS

Several customers have also reported random crashing when producing PPML output from AccurioPro VDP software. This condition appears to be related to the same general issue, but our team is still investigating.

ISSUE #4) CORRUPTION OF ADOBE INDESIGN DOCUMENTS

Adobe InDesign users in general have reported document corruption issues that may also be related to this issue. Adobe has reported that the current workaround for this specific issue is to uninstall Windows updates KB5074109 and KB5073724. Please click here to view a report of these document corruption issues on the Adobe Community forum.

WHAT SYSTEMS ARE AFFECTED?

At this time, the issue appears to affect Windows systems only and is believed to be related to a recent Microsoft Windows update or patch that was made available on or around December 15, 2025. One customer has reported the specific Windows update details as follows:

2025-12 Cumulative Update for Windows 11 Version 23H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5071417)

Once this update was reverted by their IT department the error condition was resolved. Note that this description may differ depending upon which version of Windows you are running. More details about this update appear here. In addition, please note that this report came from a AccurioPro VDP customer and our team has been unable to verify that this specific update is responsible for the issue.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

1) SOFTWARE UPDATE REQUIRED

The first step is to update your AccurioPro VDP software, which will resolve the PDF/VT error message issue. The software can be downloaded immediately from our web site at www.accurioprovdp.com/downloads. Please follow the instructions below to complete the update:

  1. Make a copy of your AccurioPro VDP Order Code
Your AccurioPro VDP Order Code is required for software activation. If you do not know the AccurioPro VDP Order code for your workstation, please select AccurioPro VDP > Help > About AccurioPro VDP... from under the main AccurioPro VDP menu. This will open a dialog window that will show your current Order Code. Please make a copy of your Order Code.

  2. Download the latest AccurioPro VDP installer
Below are the links to the very latest AccurioPro VDP software that resolve the PDF/VT serious error issue. We have made updates available for both InDesign 2025 and 2026:

    UPDATE FOR ADOBE INDESIGN 2025
Click to download the AccurioPro VDP installer for Adobe InDesign 2025 Windows

    UPDATE FOR ADOBE INDESIGN 2026
Click to download the AccurioPro VDP installer for Adobe InDesign 2026 Windows

  3. Quit Adobe InDesign and run the installer
You must quit Adobe InDesign before running the installer. Run the installer and follow the default prompts to install the updated AccurioPro VDP software.

  4. Run Adobe InDesign and Activate your AccurioPro VDP software
When the installation is complete, run your copy of Adobe InDesign. You will be prompted to activate your software. Please provide the Order Code that you copied in Step 1.

This completes the installation of AccurioPro VDP software. Please reply to your open support ticket to let us know if this update has resolved your issues.

2) BAD TAG ERRORS, MISSING LINKS/RULES, ETC

On some systems, Adobe InDesign no longer appears to send notifications when the active (frontmost) document window changes. As a result, customers running AccurioPro VDP software may notice that when switching between documents in InDesign, the AccurioPro VDP settings associated with the newly selected document are not automatically loaded. Instead, AccurioPro VDP may continue using the settings from a previously opened document.

This can manifest as error messages reported by AccurioPro VDP (such as missing links or rules). These errors messages appear not because those elements are actually missing, but because the incorrect settings are being applied to the current document.

Temporary Workaround

At this time, the only known workaround is as follows:

  1. Before working on a AccurioPro VDP variable-data job, close all open InDesign documents.
  2. Open the AccurioPro VDP document you intend to work on. This should correctly load the settings associated with that document.
  3. Do not open any additional AccurioPro VDP documents until you have finished working with the current one.
  4. Repeat these steps for each subsequent AccurioPro VDP document.

This workaround should be considered a temporary measure. We are actively investigating a permanent solution and are working closely with Adobe to determine the underlying cause.

3) CRASHING WITH PPML OUTPUT

A few customers have reported crashing while producing PPML output using AccurioPro VDP software. At the moment, we are still investigating these reports but believe these crashes to be related to the same general issue. If you are experiencing crashing with PPML output, we recommend the following:

Use PDF/VT Output

Assuming that you have installed the software update to correct the PDF error condition, we recommend using PDF/VT as an alternative to PPML output. PDF/VT provides the same or even more efficiency in terms of caching and speed and is the preferred VDP output format for many vendors.

Try Splitting the PPML Job

We have noticed that splitting up the PPML file using the Page Sets per Job feature has resolved the crashing condition for some customers. Please visit the Page Sets per Job page on our web site for more information about how to use this feature.

As with the other issues, these alternatives should be considered temporary measures. You will be notified once a permanent fix is available.

4) DOCUMENT CORRUPTION ISSUES

There is currently no workaround for the document corruption issues other than to uninstall Windows updates KB5074109 and KB5073724. Please note that the information concerning document corruption and the proposed workaround was provided by Adobe and has not been confirmed or tested by our team. Please proceed with caution.

CHECKING FOR WINDOWS UPDATES

If the workarounds presented here cannot be implemented, or if you continue to experience these conditions, you may wish to attempt to revert the Windows updates which may have caused the condition. To do so, you should first verify whether a Windows update had been installed by performing the following steps:

  1. Open Settings on your Windows workstation
  2. Click on Windows Update in the left sidebar
  3. Click on Update History in the main panel
  4. Look for any updates that occurred between December 7, 2025 and December 15, 2025.
Any updates that were installed during this time period are likely to be causing this issue.

RECOMMENDATIONS

  1. If you encounter this issue, please open a Support Ticket so we can let you know immediately when an update is available.
  2. Install the AccurioPro VDP software update as indicated in the previous section. This should take care of the immediate PDF/VT error issue.
  3. If the issue remains unresolved, we recommend that you delay the installation of any Microsoft Windows updates on workstations where you intend to use AccurioPro VDP software to produce variable PDF/VT files. In such case we also recommend contacting your IT support to determine whether a recent Windows update was applied to your system and, if possible, whether that update can be reverted.

This issue has been reported to Adobe for further investigation and follow-up. We will notify you if we receive any new information regarding this issue.

We sincerely apologize for any disruption this may cause and appreciate your patience and continued support of AccurioPro VDP software.
